WHAT HAVE BEEN ACCOMPLISHED:
JMEC has been structural subconsultant to major Prime Consultants for 6 different on-call bridge seismic retrofit contracts for the California Department of Transportation.
For Contract 59X846, JMEC completed the seismic analysis, seismic retrofit strategy determination, seismic retrofit design, and provided construction design support services for two bridges including the Westfield Downing Avenue POC over Route 17.
The bridge is 563-ft long and made up of single cell box girder supported on concrete piers and with circular approach ramp structures. The two spans over the freeway are of precast prestressed units with a span length of 85-ft, and the approach structures are of cast-in-place reinforced concrete. To minimize impacts to freeway traffic, the center pier was designed to resist all lateral load in conjunction with the two circular approach structures, while the expansion joint was designed to transfer seismic loads across the expansion joint. The retrofit measurements included:
- Strength center pier and foundations by adding CIDH piles
- Add steel column casings to all columns at approach structures
- Add tie-rods across expansion joints
